JFS’ Geriatric Counselor provides sliding scale counseling sessions to address depression, anxiety, bereavement, and other issues. Counseling services are provided at JFS’ Irvine office or Temple Judea in Laguna Woods and in home for those who are care management clients.
Depression and Aging
Because many older people have to deal with things that would make anyone “depressed,” like the death of loved ones, the transition to retirement, chronic illnesses, and loss of mobility, depression in older adults is often dismissed as a normal part of aging. But most older people do get back to their daily lives after periods of grief and loss.
In a person who is depressed, the feelings of sadness continue for much longer, making it difficult for them to cope both mentally and physically with the activities of daily living. The good news is that depression in older adults can be successfully treated through counseling and therapy.
