History
Jewish Family Service (JFS) was the first Jewish community agency to be established in Orange County. It started functioning in 1966. JFS was incorporated in 1971.
Today, JFS is a multi-service agency that serves approximately 7,200 people per year in all of its programs. The agency serves people of all cultures and ethnicities.
Mission
The mission of JFS is to assist people in achieving self-sufficiency by strength- ening their ability to manage life challenges and crises successfully. In both word and deed JFS respects the dignity and self-determination of the individual and family.
Program Narrative: 2007
Counseling and Support Groups
This program provides fee-base services to individuals, couples, families and groups experiencing emotional and psychological life challenges. The goal is to help clients solve problems and function more competently. Professional counselors facilitate the counseling sessions.
The agency offers single and multi- session support groups covering a variety of topics related to daily living. The goals are behavioral and attitudinal change and the prevention of problems in the future.
JFS offers counseling services at its main office in Irvine and at its satellite operations at Temple Judea in Laguna Woods and Heritage Pointe Jewish Home for the Aging in Mission Viejo.
Older Adults Services
The agency provides counseling, crisis intervention, advocacy, information, consultation and assistance, and care management for older adults and their families. Agency staff work directly with older adults, caregivers, family members and other agencies in order to secure appropriate services to ensure the health, safety, independence and self-sufficiency of the older adult. There is a special program of in-home support services and socialization events for elderly Holocaust survivors.
Financial Empowerment
Women Forward/Three Steps to Independence—This program provides case management, employment services, advocacy, mentorship and counseling for individuals and families in economic crisis. The goal of these programs is to help clients achieve financial independence and self-sufficiency.
Community Services
Special Needs Commission
The SNC ascertains the needs and concerns of people with physical, sensory and learning disabilities and connects individuals and families with appropriate resources from JFS and other appropriate service providers.
Information and Consultation
JFS provides information, consultation and advice to help people in securing resources and maximizing their self-sufficiency. JFS refers and connects those in need with the appropriate programs and services in the community. These resources may include providers of food, shelter, affordable housing, transportation, legal assistance, and in-home support services.
Jewish Healing Center/Community Chaplain
This consists of several agency services together with support from rabbis and congregations to provide assistance to people coping with illness or injury or terminal illness. The program components are support groups, bikur cholim (visiting the sick), a community chaplain, and information and consultation
Jewish Free Loan
This program provides repayable loans without interest as an instrument for helping individuals and families through a crisis.
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are involved with JFS in a variety of service areas. The agency provides training and support for its volunteers. Volunteers provide senior advocacy, volunteer visiting, mentoring to children and adults, hospice and bereavement visitations, office support and pro bono professional services.
